FocusDown vs Forest (2026): Flip Ritual vs Virtual Trees
Full disclosure: we make FocusDown, so read this with that in mind. We've kept the comparison factual — Forest is a genuinely good app that's helped millions of people, and for some people it's the better pick. Here's how the two actually differ.
Head-to-head
| FocusDown | Forest | |
|---|---|---|
| Core mechanic | Physical face-down flip (accelerometer) | Stay in-app while a tree grows |
| Phone during session | Face-down, screen off | Face-up, screen on, in Forest |
| Session pauses on pickup | ✓ automatic | tree dies if you leave |
| Progression | XP, levels, streaks, 5 mascot energy states | Trees, forest view, real-tree planting |
| Collect as you focus | Countries, stamps & souvenirs (Focus Travels) | Tree species |
| Soundscapes | ✓ lo-fi, rain, white noise, café | limited ambient sounds |
| Pomodoro timer | ✓ built-in | fixed session timers |
| Social | Head-to-head friend battles, leaderboards, live rooms | Group planting sessions |
| Price | Free to start; optional Pro subscription (free trial) | Paid app (iOS) + in-app purchases |
| Platform | iOS | iOS & Android |
The psychology: watching vs flipping
Forest's tree is a deterrent: leave the app and something you grew dies. It works, but the phone stays face-up in your hand — the slot machine is still on the table, lit up.
FocusDown inverts it. The face-down flip removes the screen from your field of view entirely, which matters: the University of Texas "brain drain" study found a visible phone drains cognitive capacity even when silent. And because the session pauses instead of punishing you, checking something urgent doesn't torch your progress — flip back down and keep going.
Choose Forest if…
- You're on Android (FocusDown is iPhone-only for now)
- You want a one-time purchase instead of a subscription
- The real-tree-planting program is meaningful to you
Choose FocusDown if…
- You want your phone out of sight and out of hand, not hosting the timer face-up
- Streaks, XP, and a mascot that visibly evolves keep you more motivated than a static forest
- You study or work with friends and want head-to-head focus battles
- You want soundscapes + Pomodoro built into the same app
